I used to think that nothing could beat Lost. Yes, I am a Lost freak. I’ve seen the whole series four times and when the exhibition of the objects from it came to Barcelona, I went and took pictures.

However, after trying with Fringe (can’t help it, it’s because of Pacey…), Once upon a time and others, I have finally found something better. I must thank a friend’s husband who recommended Homeland to me. I have always loved Claire Danes. My so called life was great, Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is brilliant (though every time I see it now I expect Mercutio to scream ‘Waaaaaaaalt’ anytime) and she is in one of my favorite movies: the Hours. Moreover, I have a soft spot for redheads so the idea appealed to me immediately.
Sin embargo, después de intentarlo con Fringe (no puedo evitarlo, es por Pacey…), Once upon a time y otras, finalmente he encontrado algo mejor. Debo dar las gracias al marido de una amiga que me recomendó Homeland. Claire Danes siempre me ha encantado. My so called life fue genial, Romeo + Juliet de Luhrmann es brillante (aunque cada vez que la veo ahora espero que Mercutio grite ‘Waaaaaaalt’ en cualquier momento) y también aparece en una de mis películas preferidas: The Hours. Además, tengo debilidad con los pelirrojos así que, la idea me atrajo inmediatamente.
Now, here is when you stop reading this post if you still haven’t seen the two first seasons of Homeland. Just in case. 😉 Terrorism, the subject matter chosen for this fiction, is somewhat difficult to deal with, especially in the States. In my opinion, talking about this topic, you have to be very cautious not to hurt audiences’ feelings. That’s the main reason why Homeland caught my attention. Terrorism is treated from a humane perspective, with its reasons to exist and with all the contradictions it has. Who is the villain? Who is the victim? Don’t you love it when things are not either black or white? Actually, maybe nothing is.
Ahora, aquí es cuando dejas de leer este post si no has visto todavía las dos primeras temporadas de Homeland. Por si acaso. 😉 Terrorismo, el tema escogido para esta obra de ficción, es un poco difícil de tratar, especialmente en Estados Unidos. A mi entender, hablando de este tema, tienes que ser muy cuidadoso para no herir la sensibilidad de las audiencias. Esta es la razón principal por la que Homeland llamó mi atención. El terrorismo se trata desde una perspectiva humana, con sus razones de existir y las contradicciones que tiene. ¿Quién es el malo? ¿Quién es la víctima? ¿No os encanta cuando las cosas no son ni blancas ni negras? En realidad, quizás nada lo es.
Carrie Mathison, Nicholas Brody, Jessica, Dana…they all go through very hard experiences and I think viewers (at least I do) believe their reactions, understand the reasons why they end up doing a thing and not another. The script doesn’t seem unnatural in any way. In two seasons, there has just been a scene that I didn’t buy because you cannot kill a man with one hand while talking on the phone with your wife and reassuring her that everything is fine.
Carrie Mathison, Nicholas Brody, Jessica, Dana… todos atraviesan duras experiencias y creo que los espectadores (al menos yo) creen sus reacciones, entienden las razones por las que acaban haciendo una cosa y no otra. El guion no parece forzado de ninguna manera. En dos temporadas, solo ha habido una escena que no me creí porque no se puede matar a un hombre con una mano mientras hablas con tu mujer por teléfono y le aseguras que todo va bien.
